Director’s Short Bio Yokohama-born Kawakami Atiqa won the Kirin Art Award 2001 for her debut short documentary Pilgrimage, which followed a second-generation Japanese-American visiting his WWII internment camp. Her career spans directing documentaries, producing fiction films, and collaborating with musicians. Motivated by regret over her grandfather’s isolated death, she spent the final six years of world-renowned butoh dancer Ohno Kazuo’s life at his side with a camera. Captivated by the aging body, she focuses on filming the miraculous spark of life within the human form. Atiqa works entirely without a crew to build deep trust, using close-up camerawork to capture authentic intimacy with her subjects.
